Abstract
In normally sighted people, visual cortical areas specialized for particular aspects of visual processing are recruited during corresponding aspects of tactile processing. The extent to which this is based in visual imagery, as opposed to the recruitment of multisensory processes, varies with object familiarity. In those with congenital blindness, visual cortex appears to be involved in a number of functions, including language. Thus, the visual cortex is not the exclusive province of vision.
