Abstract
Abstract:
Visual field examination can facilitate the detection, diagnosis, and surveillance of a wide variety of diseases of the eye and brain. However, perimeters are not widely available in the community because they are bulky and expensive. Further, many patients cannot keep the eye still throughout the examination. In 1983, it occurred to me that these obstacles could be overcome by encouraging the patient to move the eye during the test. This revelation made it possible for individuals to self-examine the central 25 visual field using a paper chart. A disposable screening card for glaucoma was developed and distributed widely. A computerized visual field test was then created, which used an interactive fixation target to enhance compliance. This led to the development of an online version of the test (www.testvision.org).
It should be noted that not all established knowledge is based on evidence on which researchers can build upon.
