The role of the visual periphery in depth perception

Abstract - I will describe the studies in the lab on residual stereopsis in individuals with macular degeneration. We have shown that the presence of stereopsis benefits eye-hand coordination in stereopsis. More recently we have also measured the pattern of vision loss in each eye in individuals with macular degeneration and used it to predict whether or not they will have coarse stereopsis. Finally, we have mapped the periphery with local disparity stimuli to demonstrate the presence of coarse stereopsis consistent with our predictions.
