Portrait of Alan Scott

This Alan Scott Fund is dedicated to supporting vision research that reflects the kind of “outside the box” thinking and innovation for which Alan Scott was famous.

During his long career as a pediatric ophthalmologist and researcher, Alan always took ideas from other fields and applied them to practical clinical vision problems. The most famous example was his invention of “Botox”, applying a deadly toxin, injected in a greatly diluted form, to weaken eye muscles and straighten the alignment of the eyes in people with strabismus or “crossed eyes”. This was so successful that its use spread to many other fields of treatment and became a household name.

Accordingly, this Fund aims to support other highly innovative, unconventional, or high-risk research projects in the spirit of Alan Scott, with the potential for future high payoff in patient or user benefit.

Examples Include:

  • Projects that harness techniques from unexpected areas to solve vision problems.
  • Research that is considered to be too “high risk” for conventional funding sources to support
  • Research that may go against conventional wisdom, but if proven right could have an important impact on visual diagnosis, treatment, or rehabilitation. or visual impairment.
  • Projects that apply concepts considered to be “outside the box” in their totally new, counter-intuitive or seemingly indirect approach to solving clinical vision problems.

Get Involved

Your support can make a significant difference in helping get new projects started to meet these vital needs. Your donation is in effect multiplied many times by enabling projects such as these to advance enough to qualify for federal research grants to carry them to full fruition and practical success. Here are ways you can get involved:

  • Donate: Contributions to the Alan Scott Fund for Innovative Research directly support the kind of projects that would normally never be attempted but which have potentially very high payoffs.
  • Referrals and Contacts: Whether or not you can donate personally, if you have friends or contacts who may be interested in SKERI’s work and potentially able to help support it, please call or email us.
  • Spread the Word: Help raise awareness about the fund and its impact by sharing our mission with your network.
